Game design

Gameplay is the core of a game it determines whether you will love the game or just truly hate it. Different genres have different gameplay styles for an example FPS’s should be in first person and should involve lots of guns and blood, RPG’s should consist of a long and enjoyable story with party based fighting and other elements such as weapon and armour customisation and abilities like magic.
To really get the design of a game going you need a solid design team who know there stuff and to back the a good group of concept designers, programmers, animators and so on. The leading lights for me are the concept artist because they show visually what the game is all about and the feel of the game basically reinforcing the designers initial thoughts of what the game should be.
The design stage is early in the games process of development and can depending on the game go right through to the end of development. The responsibility is on all the teams shoulders and not one persons.
Things that are important to me are a good griping story that keeps me wanting to play, fun gameplay with fun little things.

writing about games

My views on game journalism are that you should never trust what the reviewers have said because if it is a game or a series of games that you have followed and enjoyed for years and it is the sequel then get it.
Most game reviewers write about crap like if it lives up to the determined genres expectations but sometimes forget to realise that this game may be the developers interpretation of that genre. Most of the review is crap and only some important bits are actually mentioned like the story, the characters and even the art used to create the world and it inhabitants oh and also the gameplay, well those are the important bits for me anyway.
Now on to the important stuff, I think the issues facing reviewers are for one not trying to completely insult the developers if the game is totally atrocious , keeping the audience or the gamer in mind so that the fully understand what the reviewer is trying to say about certain aspects of the game. Some of the content used as well like that review on Rez for the PS2 where he talks about the vibrating thing that came with the game in a sexual way this may insult people and cause many other problems but otherwise i think it is genius and funny.
The people who pay their wages are the publisher of the magazine they are writing for.
The ranking system for games does have a big tie in with the sales of computer games because most people follow what is said and never decide well I’m going to ignore that and get the game because that is a view of a particular person not you. Is it feasible yes because it works.

My Gaming History

The first videogame that I ever played was Rebel Assault 2 on the PSX. From there i stayed playing on the PSX and the general computer playing games such as Overboard, Independence Day, Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex, and many others.
Then the year the PS2 came out I got one for Christmas, the first game i got for that was CRAZY TAXI which to be honest was appalling and sucked loads then I got Star Wars Starfighter which being a star wars fan was one of my all time favourite games just because you could destroyer things in space.
Then a few years later I was introduced the the Final Fantasy series, the first that I played was number ten, and right from the start I was hooked just because the story was so intense and fun to play at the same time. Then my brother got a Xbox and another great star wars game, which i might say there are very few, Republic Commando which was so much fun to play. Another great Xbox game i played was Fable then the lost chapters version and that to me was one of my most favourite games and to me stands out as one of the Xbox’s best games as well.
Then came the Next generation consoles which out of the two I prefer the PS3 which was the first out of the two that I had got, mainly because the Playstation franchise had never let me down and was far greater than and I’m sorry for saying this the gay box.
After saying what i have just said you could say that i am contradicting myself because i now have a Xbox 360.

videogame history

Video games were first created and developed by students or lecturers as a hobby during time at university but were only accessible via the universities mainframe. Due to the limited amount of computer hardware early in the age of the video games they were considerably small in number and often forgotten and left.
It wasn’t until 1961 when a group of students from MIT fronted by Steven Russell created what you could really call the first computer game, the game was called spacewar and it was created on the DEC PDP-1 which was a relatively new computer at the time. The game pitted two humans against each other, each player controlled a space craft which could fire missiles but just to add some more fun in to it there was a black hole in the centre which they had to navigate around whilst trying to destroy each other.
In 1966 Ralph Baer created what is now considered to be a simple game known as chase that displayed on a standard television and was the first game to ever do this. With a lot of help from Baer, Bill Harrison created the light gun in 1967.
Through the years there were many other innovations that led to computer games becoming the phenomenon it is today. One of these innovations was known as the golden age of arcade games which if you think about it the arcade game is basically the starting block for what would later become the console.
It is weird when you think that what we use for fun started as a hobby to keep people amused during university.
